From outside, the eMachine D725 looks like any budget laptop built for low-end users. In fact, at first glance it eerily resembles an IBM laptop, before its reinvention as Lenovo and the much needed facelift in the design department. It does not help even if some reviewers refer to the design as "simplified" and "chic." But turn it on and the otherwise dorky machine transforms into an alien ware.

The D725 is the latest in eMachines' portable yet reliable gadgets--notebooks that are both efficient and affordable. Priced at just about $500, the D725 is the best candidate to fill everyone's computing needs. It is perfect for students, housewives and small entrepreneurs--people who are running on a tight budget.

But just because it is cheap does not mean it cheats when it comes to performance. The machine is distributed by Acer, one of the world's most trusted computer manufacturer. If that does not convince you yet, consider the following technical specifications:

a. processor -- Intel® Pentium® Dual Core T4200 2.0GHz, 1Mb, 800MHz
b. memory -- 1.0Gb DDR2 800MHz (and if you're lucky, you may even get an additional 1.0 Gb upgrade from your distributor
c. hard disk -- 160Gb SATA Hard Drive
d. DVD drive -- DVD RW / with ext. Bluetooth
e. 14.1in. WXGA Screen with camera
f. Wireless LAN BG
g. multiple card reader
h. Wired LAN

Oh, and did I mention that the memory is upgradeable to 4Gb using two soDIMM modules? Imagine the hours of playtime, er, I mean sales presentation, you can do with this new baby.

Simple yet powerful, the eMachine D725 is proof that even in these trying times it is still possible to make sound investments. Highly-recommended.
